Railway cancels several trains in Sealdah division on December 28-29
India bid farewell to one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday night at AIIMS Delhi. The former prime minister, celebrated economist, and architect of India’s economic liberalization, had been battling health issues for some time.
Born in Punjab in 1932, Singh’s illustrious journey in public service began in 1971 as an economic advisor in the commerce ministry. Rising through the ranks, he became the finance minister during a time of economic crisis in 1991, introducing transformative reforms that opened India’s economy to the world. He went on to serve two consecutive terms as India’s prime minister, from 2004 to 2014, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s economic and political landscape.
Condolences poured in from leaders across the political spectrum and around the globe. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief, calling Singh “a visionary leader and a humble statesman,” while remembering his words and wisdom. Modi, alongside Home Minister Amit Shah, paid his respects at Singh’s residence on Friday morning. President Droupadi Murmu described his passing as a “great loss to the nation,” commending his unblemished service and humility.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, referred to Singh as his mentor and guide, saying he would be remembered “with utmost pride.” Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi also mourned the loss, and the Congress Party announced a week-long suspension of all official events, including its foundation day celebrations and rallies.
Industrialists and global leaders echoed the sentiments. Business magnate Gautam Adani hailed Singh’s role in reshaping India’s economy through the 1991 reforms, while Harsh Goenka termed him “a true statesman.” Former leaders, including Afghanistan’s Hamid Karzai and Maldives’ Mohamed Nasheed, described Singh as a “benevolent father figure” and “one of India’s illustrious sons.”
As a mark of respect, the Union government declared seven days of national mourning. Flags will fly at half-mast, and no official entertainment will take place during this period. Singh’s mortal remains were brought to his residence at 3 Motilal Nehru Marg, where they will lie in state for the public to pay their respects. His last rites, set for Saturday, will be performed with full state honors.
Manmohan Singh’s passing is not just the end of a political era but a profound loss for the nation. His contributions to India’s economic reforms and governance will remain an enduring legacy.
